Deadline Extended — Global History Today: From Premodern to Modern History, 21-22.05.2026, Yerevan

May 22, 2026 | 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM | American University of Armenia, 40 Marshal Baghramyan Ave, Yerevan, Armenia, Conference room 233W, PAB

Extended application deadline: 30 April, 2026

We invite young researchers from the South Caucasus – master’s students, PhD and early PostDoc – to join a masterclass with Prof. Sebastian Conrad and Prof. Thomas Ertl to discuss the most recent scholarship in the field of global history. How can we apply insights from the larger field of global history to concrete projects on the master’s and PhD level? And how do we connect histories of the South Caucasus and Armenia with debates on globalization, interconnection and postcoloniality?

Thomas Ertl is professor of the history of the high and late Middle Ages at Freie Universität Berlin. He is a leading scholar in the global turn of medieval studies, focusing on the social and economic interconnectedness of the pre-modern world.

Sebastian Conrad is a prominent historian holding the Chair of Modern History at Freie Universität Berlin. He is widely considered one of the leading figures in the field of global history, known for systematizing its methodology and expanding its scope to include intellectual and social dimensions.

To apply for this class, please send a short motivational letter of approximately 400 words to info@mws-georgia.org until 10 April, 2026. Please detail your background and current field of study and what you would like to present or discuss at the workshop. This could be your own thesis or research and how it connects to global history, or a more general question that you have in relation to global history. What do you already know? And what do you hope to learn at the workshop?

The Workshop will be held at the American University of Armenia, and it will be accompanied by public lectures by Sebastian Conrad and Thomas Ertl.

Students from the South Caucasus will receive financial support for travel and accommodation, provided by the Max Weber Foundation Georgia Branch Office.

This workshop is part of the Global History Series of the Max Weber Office, Tbilisi, in cooperation with the Turpanjian Institute of Social Sciences at the American University of Armenia. It builds on previous classes held in Yerevan and Tbilisi.
