Jvari door with St. Stephen and donor over it.

We invite researchers and students from Armenia and the South Caucasus to join a masterclass with Prof Bryan Ward-Perkins (Oxford University). Participants will gain insights into the making of the Cult of Saints in Late Antiquity Database, its contents, and into ways of working with the materials.

Prof. Ward-Perkins will explain the significance of this database for the histories of the Armenian church, and for the study of saints’ cult across all the Christianities of the period (Lives of saints, histories, liturgical texts, lists of feast-days, inscriptions, images in paint and mosaic, papyrus documents, and more besides).

Bryan Ward-Perkins is an Emeritus Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, and a leading historian and archaeologist of Late Antiquity. He is the author of the landmark study The Fall of Rome and the End of Civilization and recently led the ERC-funded Cult of Saints project. His research spans the transition from the Roman to the medieval world, with particular focus on urbanism, the economy, and the cult of saints. He recently directed the major ERC-funded project, The Cult of Saints from its origins to c. AD 700.

To apply for this class, please send a short motivational letter to info@mws-georgia.org
until 17 April, 2026. Please briefly indicate your background and why you would like to
