About us

The Max Weber Foundation Georgia Branch Office was founded in 2023. It promotes academic cooperation between historians from Georgia, the adjacent Caucasus states and Germany. In particular, the Georgia Branch Office supports the research activities of younger scholars. The history of the bilateral relations of the Caucasian states and societies with Germany, the transnational and international history of the Caucasus and the Black Sea region as well as historical Georgian and Caucasian perspectives on the rise, decline, competitions, domination and aftermath of empires (such as the Russian Empire/Soviet Union, the Ottoman Empire, the Persian Empire or the Byzantine Empire) represent first core areas of the Georgia Branch office’s academic activities.

Being committed to the principles of academic objectivity and transparency, the Georgia Branch Office initiates, promotes and coordinates joint research projects ranging from ancient history to contemporary history in a global perspective. It holds international conferences, round tables, colloquia and seminars. The Georgia Branch Office provides access to the libraries and academic networks of the Max Weber Foundation, thus connecting colleagues and students to a significant academic infrastructure.

The Max Weber Foundation, to which the office belongs, is based in Bonn and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It brings together around a dozen humanities research institutions abroad (e.g. in New Delhi, Paris, London, Istanbul, Beirut, Warsaw, Washington). In its research activities the Georgia Branch Office cooperates with the Foundation´s network including the new Network Eastern Europe.
